Service on our two visits has been solid, if not exceptional - friendly enough and quick (almost too quick) in whisking away empty bowls.
Prices are reasonable: $10 for ramens and $5-6 for sides. It may not be the most "authentic" ramen joint, but flavors are bold (The Tonkotsu-Shio is our favorite) and dishes creative (watch those fish flakes "dance" atop those addictive Tots, served piping hot in a tiny cast iron skillet!). That's it - simple as that! Food is really good, warming and filling. A few beers, sakes and non-alcoholic drinks and some mochi options. 3 appetizers: Potstickers, Sesame Greens and "Okonomiyaki Tots". Thrillist describes Cheerful Bullpen as 'a cozy sports bar thats one of the best places in Portland to watch a soccer match', 1 and a 'no-frills sports bar and the OG home of the Timbers Army, with a mural outside depicting the citys. Menu is super-easy to decipher, just 4 ramen choices: a pork-filled "Tonkotsu-Shio", a "Shiitake Shiyo" with pickled mushrooms, a Red Miso, and a Vegetarian Curry. Cheerful Bullpen is a pub in southwest Portland s Goose Hollow neighborhood, across from Providence Park. Music was 90s hip-hop on one visit, 60s-inspired surfer rock the next. The space is "tall", exposed to the weathered underside of a century-old warehouse beams and lit by an array of skylights walls are festooned with illustrated characters slurping noodles and such. Inside is a cozy mix of low, fixed stools placed around variously-sized tables and a winding countertop, spread across an aquamarine floor.
Situated in a storefront opposite the Ace Hotel in the new Union Way "alley" that cuts between SW Stark St and W Burnside, Boxer Ramen (opened Fall 2013) sits rather inconspicuously at the south-facing entrance.
